Jelani Ellington began his career at Ford Motor Company in the Ford College Graduate (FCG) management track group. His positions at Ford Motor Company included Body & Chassis Engineer, Cooperate Liaison, Quality and Reliability, and Vehicle Operations. Following his time with Ford Motor Company, Ellington transitioned to the General Motors Corporation where he began as a Product Development Performance Integration Team Leader in charge of Sealing, Wind Noise, and Aerodynamics. Ellington also held positions in Quality, Design, and Cost Reduction before transferring to OnStar Corporation (a fully owned subsidiary). At OnStar, Ellington was responsible for setting the strategic direction of the business unit, introducing new products and services, and creating the franchising model for Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, China, and South Africa. Ellington then transitioned to Capital One Financial Corporation where he performed as an internal consultant supporting lines of business including Credit Card, Automotive finance, Banking, Mortgage and Point of Sale Line of Business. Ellington then accepted a position with WellPoint, the largest health insurance company in the United States. As a director for WellPoint, Jelani was charged with instilling a enterprise wide continuous improvement mentality and toolset within the company.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Ellington received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina A&T State University. As a GM Fellow, Ellington received a MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He has also received a Masters of Science in Management and Masters of Science in Systems Engineering degree awarded jointly from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering. Ellington is currently completing his dissertation for his Doctor of Management from the University of Maryland. Ellington was nominated for and recognized for numerous awards.
Ellington, who is an avid reader, holds a black belt in Kuk Sool Won and enjoys most water sports, especially SCUBA diving. Ellington also speaks English, Spanish, and some Mandarin Chinese.
